Hello everyone! I'm an eighteen year old who is six months pregnant and living on fun minimum wage paychecks and did I mention have no help from anyone, just me. And I've noticed that everything is expensive, does anyone know where I can find cheap baby things? I've already hit up every second hand store including good will and the salvation army. They have clothes but no cribs or strollers. At this point any imput would be nice! :-) Thanks!
Salvation army/goodwill doesn't like to carry cribs and playpens because they don't want to train the staff in how to figure out if the product is safe or not because their goal is to train staff and have them move on so they can help more people get experience that they need to get a job, or they employ people with disabilities.
Second hand shops should have cribs, playyards, etc but they aren't necessarily cheap.
Your best bet is freecycle: http://www.freecycle.org/
Craigslist is the second best: http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites
Also check out meetup.com and yahoo groups (I can't even list the url without the http as yahoo answers blocked it) com for parenting groups near you. Try to find someone with a baby 6-12 months older than yours will be that will hand things down to you.
Make sure you get the safety checklist for cribs and carseats from your government (it varies by country). Buy a NEW crib mattress -you shouldn't even use a crib mattress between siblings as it can increase the SIDS risks and they aren't sure why the theories are the break down in fire-retardant and mold/mites in the mattress. Only accept a second hand car seat from someone that loves your kids as much as you do (close friends and family) you don't need an infant seat you can use a convertible seat from birth (if that's what you are offered, but generally people have infant seats to give as they are used for such a short time). Call the manufacturer to make sure the seat isn't recalled or expired. -Remember most recalls are not to destroy the products its normally a small fix, and even if it is a destroy they replace it even if you got it for free.
Also check recalls: http://www.cpsc.gov/
I got some Clothes for Ben and Blake
I live in Michigan, and I have a ton of gently worn baby clothes and blankets etc. Does anyone know of any charities I could donate these too. I would prefer it go somewhere where it won't be resold such as salvation army and whatnot. A battered women's home, single parent charity, etc. Any ideas would be great. I just want it all to go to good use because I know there are plenty of people who need it. Thanks!
I would suggest that you put an add in the paper so that someone is aware that you are giving them to someone in need.

I have a lot of baby boy clothes (some used and in great condition, some new), and I would like to donate them. I don't care where, just as long as the organization is reputable (like the salvation army or something). Does anyone know how to find a place to drop them off? Or is there a way to find out where those big bins are that you can put used clothes in?
Another place that you can look for are Women's shelters. There are shelters for women and children, most for those who have left homes where there was abuse. They always need baby and women's items.
They are not as accessible, organizations that are listed in your yellow pages or online in your town that help women will be able to tell you how to go about donating. The addresses for these places are not public for safety reasons. If you don't have any women's shelters call the nearest homeless shelter or mission. They likely have a network and can help you.

I want to store the baby clothes from my son and daughter for when they have kids. How do you suggest I do this?
Some of the outfits will be turned into a blanket for each child. Then some others are going to goodwill / salvation army. And the rest in storage for at least 20 years. Wow...that seems like such a long time.
My son is 24. I've kept several precious items of clothing and his first stuffed toy in a plastic bag with a zipper that you get when you buy bedding. No mold. No mildew. I have just tossed it on a closet shelf everytime I've moved. The clothing is in pristine condition.
has anyone shopped at goodwill or the salvation army for baby clothes..are they any good
also .. is it safe for newborns.im 38 weeks and we cant really spend to much on baby clothes...also would it be ok to just let her wear only a diaper at home
Prefectly safe, just wash them in warm water. You just will have to dig through to find the good ones. Ask them if they get shipments of close on particular days. A diaper is fine at home if it is warm or just a onsie. A sleeper is appropriate if cold. Those will be easy to find. Also try yard sales and end of season sales for the next year.

Cat and Bird: recycled in Melbourne: Salvation Army Op-Shop ...
So this blog is like a little library of my op-shop experiences. i'll endeavour to go to a different one around melbourne each week. commenting on the quality, variety and rarity of clothes and items, music, atmosphere, local food and pt (public transport.) i don't really believe in rating things, especially since most op-shops/vintage stores are run by volunteers/minimally paid people.
