How do you get banana out of your babies clothing?
(Untitled)

Before becoming a Mother, I never realised that banana stained clothes so badly. All of her burp clothes, muslins and bibs are stained with banana and it doesn't matter how many times I wash them or how hot, the stains don't come out. How do you all get banana stains out of your baby clothes?

In SA we have a bar of Sunlight soap, it works miracles, research it and try to find something similar where you live.
It takes any stain right out, even red cool-aid!

Shout stain remover for babies clothing?
(Untitled)

Can I put Shout stain remover on my newborns clothing to remove folmula stains?
If not, what is a better idea or product?

And what is the best detergent to wash my babies cloths in? I generally use the stuff I use for my husband and my clothes, just a much smaller amount and in warm water.

Also, what is Dreft..detergent or softener?

Thank you.
Why not use fabric softener?

shout or any of the clothing stain remover is a great idea. kids ruin clothes so fast, and it will help your babys clothes last longer, and be in good shape if you are going to save them or donate them when he outgrows stuff.

i always washed both my kids stuff with our clothes with whatever detergent we used at the time.

dreft is a detergent formulated for sensitive skin. some kids are more sensitive than other.

How hard is it to sew clothing for babies?
(Untitled)

I recently went to a website where the sell homemade clothing for babies and sell it very expensive. I would really like to get into doing this myself. I was wondering how hard it is to learn to sew simple things like a sundress or something. Also how expensive is it?
I have not ever sewn on a machine, just by hand and haven't ever made anything. I was wondering what I need to kind of get started, is there a book or something you all suggest to read to give me the basics?

I'd probably start you with KwikSew's Sewing for Babies, which is a book with patterns and instructions... but you'll still need some hand or machine sewing skills to get started. A beginner's class or at least a beginning DVD on garment sewing is going to be something you want.

Kids clothes are actually a good place to start... they use such small amounts of fabric that if you screw up something badly, you haven't lost a whole lot of fabric.

Cost for the fabric varies widely -- from a few dollars a yard for basic cottons and poly-cotton blends to hundreds of dollars a yard for some specialty fabrics that might wind up in something like a christening gown. Something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Toddler-Girls%2527 -Cherokee-Watercolor-Dress/dp/B001KLGJAI might have $5 worth of materials in it and 2-3 hours of labor on a sewing machine. Something like the dress on the right here: http://www.amazon.com/French-Hand-Sewing -Machine-Second/dp/9999840329 might have $15 worth of fabric, $100 worth of lace, and 50-100 hours of labor.

If you're thinking about doing this for hire, and you're in the USA, you need to know about CPSIA, which covers garments for kids 12 and under. http://www.fashion-incubator.com/archive /cpsia-childrens-apparel-exemptions/ This is a law with big, sharp teeth.

You'll also need to know that commercial patterns are not licensed for making things for sale, so you'll need to come up with your own patterns. The better the patterns are made, the faster they'll sew together.

Is it bad to buy clothing from babies r us?
(Untitled)

I've spent almost $300 on newborn clothing and blankets at babies r us. It's my first and don't really have anybody to tell me the do's and don'ts of baby shopping. I now realize that my baby will grow out of it fast... Should I exchange the sleepers for daytime outfits instead, and bigger sizes? Any advice will help.

$300 is high for newborn clothing. Babies R Us isnt the problem, its what you are buying. They carry Carter's below the cost of Mervyn's and JC Penney. Also start looking at clearance racks. The basics you need:
Newborn
5 onesies
A size small Halo sleepsack
One cute outfit
Socks

0-3 months
5-10 onesies
the sleepsack should still fit
3-7 footed sleepers
more socks
2-3 cute outfits

3-6 months should be similar to the above

9, 12, 18 and 24 months
still 5-10 onesies
still footed sleepers if in a cooler climate
3-5 cute outfits.

Remember that BRU can give you gift cards for what you return so you can use it on wipes (especially for baby are great), bottles, pacifiers, and the little things you will need.

what is in babies clothing that makes it flame retardiant?

whats in babies clothing that makes it flame retardiant?

Here is a snippit of what I found and the link is noted on the bottom, hope it helps!

Most sleepwear made from synthetic fiber is polyester and according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), "less than 1% of either polyester or cotton sleepwear garments are treated with flame retardant chemicals." The key word here is "treated," which, in this case, does not mean exactly what one might suppose. Treated or not, most children's sleep clothes made of synthetic fabrics will contain flame retardant chemicals in one way or another. In some cases, the material is treated after it is woven or after the garment is finished; in other cases, the flame retardant is actually bonded into the composition of the fabric. Therefore, the most chemical-free (as well as comfortable) option is untreated, snug-fitting cotton stretchies. But it's crucial to note that they must be snug-fitting in order to comply with government safety rules.

Chemicals used on pyjamas or pyjama fabrics include halogenated hydrocarbons (chlorine and bromine), inorganic flame retardants (antimony oxides) and phosphate based compounds, all of which are the basic building blocks of most conventional fire retardants. Like all fabric finishes, fire retardants can off-gas into the air children breathe and irritate their skin. For purposes of the CPSC, synthetic materials are either considered to be "inherently" flame resistant or treated with flame retardants. Materials not requiring treatment include most polyesters, modacrylic (Verel, SEF, Kanecaron); matrix (Cordelan); and vinyon (Leavil). However, "inherently" flame resistant polyester textiles are manufactured with built-in fire retardants. This is because the fire retardants can be chemically inserted into the polyester compound, becoming a part of its molecular composition. The enhanced polymers are quite stable, so polyester sleepwear is unlikely to pose a health risk to your child, beyond the reduced breathability of the fabric, which can contribute to overheating and rashes. And one can also consider the negative impact on the environment during its manufacture from petrochemicals.
