I will say I buy the best I can afford, because clothes from shops like marks & spencer do wash better and hold their shape better, so in long run are cheaper. But I wait for sale.

There's no way to answer that. You can spend as little as a few dollars on a onesie (or even less if you buy secondhand), or you can spend hundreds of dollars on a single outfit. And you can buy just a few outfits or have a closet crammed with baby clothes.
But babies do go through a lot of clothes, usually more than one outfit a day, between spitup, drool, leaking diapers, baby food spills, and so on. So you need to make sure you at least have enough clothing to last from one load of wash to the next.
