Cotton Baby Dress

I have a white cotton baby dress that I would like to frame and hang up. I don't want the dress to discolor or disintegrate over time. Help! How should I frame it, what should I avoid?

You could get it professionally framed from an archival specialist, but be prepared to spend some money. Or you could do it yourself. Shop around for a glass display case that resembles a shadow box. Make sure the glass is conservation quality (meaning it will filter out UV rays. Start by looking through 'amazon.com". I've been looking for a glass dome and amazon has a large selection of display cases and a few links to places that sell other kinds.
Then try 'philaprintshop.com' and get some help from the questions section or archival framing section.
Whichever way you go, make sure there are NO stains on the dress before framing. Even a small milk stain that seems unnoticable will probably yellow over time. Then hang the finished frame out of direct sunlight.

It is a baptism dress with ribbon and turned yellow from being in the bag for 10 years. It was dry cleaned 10 yrs ago and now yellowed in the collar.

I've got some cotton baby dresses, the kind with smocked necks and some with smocked sleeves, that are about twenty years old. I don't plan on having kids for 5 or 10 years, but I want to keep them safe and in good enough condition that my babies can wear them one day. How can I best store them ?

This is a hard one because fabric tends to rot no matter what. You much make sure that the dresses are clean. Either wash them good or take them to the cleaners. Store them in an air tight plastic container away from the light, cold, heat and moisture. Good luck. Hope they do well.

whenever I sew with cotton, it looks old after one wash. I usually use quilter's type cotton...I cannot afford the more expensive cottons...

The baby is 18 months!

Rayon is a much weaker fiber than most cottons, particularly when wet. Some rayons (cuproammonium rayons for instance) also need to be dry cleaned.

I'd suggest you might want to consider a nice quality polycotton blend or a good quality cotton shirting. Cheapest way I know to buy nice quality fabrics for kids clothes is to hit the thrift stores for good shirts to cut up.

If you're looking for kid's prints and especially for knits at decent prices, I've had good luck with fabrics I've gotten from http://www.wazoodle.com I've also never seen a bad piece of fabric from Spechler-Vogel's "imperial broadcloth", though that may be more than you're paying for cheaper quilting cottons -- something like:

It's knee length, very short-sleeved (almost cap-sleeved), and made out of cotton, so it's not like a jersey/poly blend material cocktail dress or anything like that. It's very simple. I don't feel comfortable in any thing else, that I can FIND anyway. I was going to wear some strappy sandals with it (flats)...

Considering the aspects that it is summer and it is a baby shower, perhaps a black dress will be a little too oppressive to support in consideration of the two details- it's marked as a faux-pas.
The length and the capped sleeves sound simple and demure/modest, but that undoubtedly concerns if you are a modest or ostentatious dresser. I would recommend a powder color; baby blues, pinks, yellows, whites, pearl, and beige.
Beige is becoming an outbreak color and can be used with great versatility, especially in the summer. Even though the black cotton dress is represented as the quintessential event dress and essential in a woman's wardrobe, it does not mean it can be used everywhere to everything and may not justify a comfort zone as it is epitomized.

As you stated, you feel comfortable with the black dress, but what areas do you feel uncomfortable with without wearing the black dress? Why not try to use other articles of clothing that disguise and/or ease the uncomfortable zones and mix and match spring colors.
Pairing some light cotton pants with a white tank top, or a pencil skirt and a thin dress shirt with suffice as it is simple and appropriate for the event and time.

If you like the cut of the dress, perhaps find that dress or a similar one but in a lighter color, as I mentioned; beige, baby blue, pink, etc.

Flat shoes are perfect for the occasion, as is a strappy sandal.

But, if you decide to were the black dress, pair it up with a white belt, black flats, and a colored necktie or necklace.
