Why do people buy fancy clothes for their babies?
Margaret Suggart, Age 3, Jan 1899.

If I ever wind up with a kid, I would probably just see if I can get old baby clothes from a buddy or a thrift store. Why would anyone dress up a baby? They all just look like babies and they don't even know what they're wearing.

UGH i know that bothers the living s h i t out of me.
and really why not save the money for something more important?

Please tell me how to make a quilt of old baby clothes-just squares, nothing fancy.?
Smiles From Galesburg, Illinois.

Please help! I have all these baby clothes that I don't have the heart to donate (they are the ones I couldn't part with) and instead of keeping them in storage I'd like to make just a simple square quilt with all of them. Can you please send some simple instructions? I have a sewing machine, and can only really sew a straight line and really don't know how to use a pattern. I'd like to just cut them into squares and sew them together. Any easy guidance on this? I'd truly appreciate it! Thanks!

It sounds to me like you already know what to do. Open up hems and seams and iron all those pieces. You may want to remove elastic, but you can probably cut and work around most of that. Remove all the buttons or zippers, but buttonholes might be kind of interesting. Since you don't have a zig zag to close those up, stitch a piece of fabric behind any button holes. Cut the pieces in squares, as many of the same size as you can. "Pro" quilters stich them together using 1/4 in. seams, but you can use larger seams. Be sure all your seams a the same depth, so your squares stay square. Straight stitching is perfect, no fancy stitches needed. If you have designs and appliques on some of the clothes, try to center them in a square as you cut. Or cut them out and make another applique for a square you do have. For a border, open up the sleeves, cut those in long rectangles, sew them end to end. Or cut long rectangles from pant legs. Try to balance colors and textures. When you're happy with your 'top' quilt, add some batting to the back side, stich it down and then add a backing, like baby flannel, or soft cotton. Sounds like you will have a beautiful keepsake when you're done. Happy stitching, Joanne

My MIL always buys fancy frilly clothes for my baby and she doesn't wear them...should I say something?
Galva, ILLs.

My MIL and SIL love buying little outfits for my baby girl but they buy fancy frilly things like dresses with bonnets, impossible to put on shoes, and stiff items my baby can't move in. I don't dress my baby in them because she gets fussy when I "dress her up". I just want her to be comforatable so she wears cotton onesies, cotton pants, stretchsuits etc. Shoes just get kicked off or don't fit her little chubby feet to begin with. She hates hats/accessories etc. I know I am doing the right thing by dressing her for comfort and not treating her like a doll to play dress up with, but I feel awful that people buy her "pretty" things that just sit in the closet never to be worn, even once. One or two nice things for pictures is one thing, but an entire wardrobe of dresses is another. Should I say something to them so they don't waste their money or should I let them have their fun and not ruin it for them? I mentioned how comfy she likes to be dressed but they ignored me/kept buying

I hate that. People always buy those stupid outfits for baby showers and I have never used them either. My sister had a similar thing with room decor -- she's an interior designer and she wanted to get me all of these things for the room that were really more for the adults' taste than anything a baby would enjoy. She kept sending me links to stuff. I had lots of necessities on my registry, so eventually I just pointed out that there were a lot of useful items we needed, and that I wanted to get those taken care of before I worried about decorations. She got the hint. But I see what you are saying -- lots of people just like shopping for cute baby stuff so maybe let them have their fun if there are not things that you really need instead.

Baby boutique clothing website?
Allie Mack.

I had a site bookmarked, I had gotten the link off of here, so I was wondering if somebody could help!! My computer had gotten a virus from my little sister so we ended up losing everything.

Anyways... There's this website that has all kinds of like fancy baby clothes, fancy big headbands, and car seat, high chair, and cart covers and just different stuff... I know it had like a pumpkin tutu type of outfit and different tutu outfits, cute diaper covers that said stuff in rhinestones... I don't know, I'm rambling, but could somebody help me out trying to find boutique websites in hopes I'll find the one I originally had bookmarked?!
I actually ended up finding it... It took me awhile of searching on yahoo's search engine though...

If anybody's interested, it's this website.

  • Fancy Baby Clothes

Fancy baby clothes are for pregnant women. Practical baby clothes are for moms.

I remember being pregnant with my first daughter and spending hours in fancy baby clothing stores. (Well, OK, fancy for me, as in Gymboree and Baby Gap. The exorbitant prices at the ritzier Oilili and Jacadi always left me feeling slightly ill. Well, slightly more ill.) I'd wander around the baby section and select cute outfits, the matching socks, the matching blanket, and very often the matching hat. I imagined how cute she'd look all dolled up in her fancy kitten print. Maybe I thought that having the perfect wardrobe would make me ready for the terrifying changes that were awaiting me. Maybe it was just fun to be able to buy tiny clothes. A lot more fun than buying more oversized maternity clothes.
