Hi, Just wanted to let all of you know that I am listing some fabulous, stunning, and beautiful infant Christening/Baptism gowns and dresses on ...

What is the best way to removed infant spit-up stains on a white dress?
Baby Lewis, Samuel... (back of photo.)

We have a 30-year-old Christening dress with some spit-up stains from some of the 14 children that were baptized in the outfit. What is the best way to safely remove these stains?

I would fill the laundry tub with warm water and mix in some oxygen cleaner until it dissolved and then soak the dress. When I treat vintage fabrics, I check them often and if the stains I'm working on are particularly stubborn (like infant formula can be) I will take a bar of Fels Naptha soap and lather it up on the stain and return it to soaking. When I do the soaker/stain loads, I use more oxyclean than the tub says, like 2 scoops instead of one. Because it is a delicate, I would not let it go through the spin cycle on my machine because it is too rough even on the delicate cycle. I would take it out, gently roll out the excess water with a terry towel. I usually rinse vintage garments with distilled water so that they do not retain detergent residue which will cause the fibers to turn a brownish yellow in storage over time. I would lay the dress either on a rack and use the air dry function in my dryer or place it on a terry towel on top of the dryer until it is dried and then use a low iron to remove wrinkles.

What do you think of baptizing a boy in a christening gown?
Front view.

My husband is opposed to our son wearing a christening gown. He would rather him wear the white short outfit that is offered for boy's christening than have him wear the gown. The gown is an heirloom that every child in my family has worn, including my brother. Does anyone else think it is no big deal to dress an infant boy in a gown for a special occassion for a few hours?

That's obviously the whole point of a "christening gown". I say it's the correct thing to do. Yes, I like tradition and continuity with past generations.

  • Child's Play:: Christening gowns

    Long baptismal or christening gowns have been an essential part of the christening ceremony at least since the nineteenth century. The earliest were made of silk, gradually replaced by lavishly embroidered white-on-white fine cotton or linen. The gowns were very long, designed to show off the elaborate handiwork as the infant was cradled in its mother's arms during the christening ceremony. The basic shape and silhouette of the gowns followed fashionable female dress of the time, and there was no difference between gowns worn by infant boys and infant girls. Several sources note that a pointed extension overlapping the waist seam on the bodice might be worn out if the gown was worn by a male...
