is it necessary to dress up infant in layers in summer even at home? my room temperature is usually around 72F ...kindly help!
No - I had my son February 22nd last year and we had him in shorts/tees by summer time. Obviously the exposure to sun should be limited and sunscreen applied, but with it being so hot it won't be a problem for your little one to regulate body temperature. They are usually working out their internal body temp around this age, anyway. The main concern is the colder weather. Hope this helps!
This Video will show you how to make infant or toddler pants without a pattern. I am sorry the video is so dark at the end. This is my first video ...
My daughter is only 6 months old but I would still like to dress her up for Halloween. I would really like to make her costume because I am having a hard time finding inexpensive ones that are warm enough to wear. Most of the ones I have found would be great if Halloween was in the summer but unfortunantly its not.
This places has the best homemade costumes ever:

1. How to give your newborn a sponge bath? I mean, can I use a waschcloth? Do I start out with a damp one with soap, then a damp one with water? I've never given one but know you have to until the umbilical cord falls off.
2. If you put diaper rash ointment on every diaper change to prevent diaper rash, do you put it on the boys penis too? Or just the butt?
3. I live in a very warm climate. Can I dress him in just a onsie (day and night in summer) I will change the onsie at night.
4. Can I wash our clothes together if use Dreft? Or should it still be seperate even though I am using the baby detergent?
5. When can he hold up his head on his own? Should I wait until then to place him on his tummy for supervised tummy time? (NO I wouldn't leave him alone like that or let him sleep that way, I mean for strengthening the muscles)
6. About how many months did your size N or 1 pampers last you? How many/day?
These questions aren't ever addressed in magazines!
A big thank you to all the great answers. Thank you for taking the time to answer all my questions! They are very helpful.
Oh fyi the ac isn't on at night because it doesn't reach my room anyway, so my room is hot, yuck
1. Yes, that is how you do it. I like to wrap the baby in a towel and then do part by part so that the baby doesn't get cold.
2. I think it is a good idea to use ointment every change to avoid getting a bad rash. I also think it is good to avoid the wipes, in the beginning at least, because they can irritate the baby skin. I usually use cotton with water and then pat dry the area. For messy diapers I wash with baby soap.
3. They say the baby should wear a layer more than you. But if you don't have ac at home and it is hot than I believe just an onsie should be fine. Be ready to change clothes often because babies tend to get their clothes dirty frequently by spiting up, leaking diapers, etc.
4.Yes you can. But do not use fabric softener.
5. You can put the baby on his tummy even before he is able to hold his head, this will help him. But he probably won't like and take it for a very short time in the beginning and yes, you should stay by his side.
6. All depends on the size of your baby.

I am a first time mom whose 4 month old is just out grown her 3-6 clothing. It is so hard to even purchase 2 months ahead (I keep all receipts and leave the tags on instead of pulling them all off and washing items...learned lesson). It is always hard to buy in season even for a baby unless you want the leftovers. I am finding that there is very little in the 9-12 month category as babies seem to be between infant and toddler stage. I am also frustrated as we are going on a cruise at the very end of April and I am struggling between 6-9 and 12 months for clothing (I am stuck with tons of summer clothing in the 6-9 range and I fear that will be too small). Department stores do not have any fancy dresses in the 6-9 or 12 month. We have a Carter's outlet (which is nice as they take back tagged items forever). I have also purchased basics at Target, Walmart, Kohls and Macy's. I can not find many pjs in th 12 month range as well. Any input would be appreciated!!!
Thank you
Try E-bay or a good second hand store (Once upon a Time is a good one). Becasue children grow out of sizes so fast you can usually get some really cute/nice used stuff if you take time to look. Babies R Us is good for in store shopping. If you have to, go a little big...at least you know she will eventually grow into it.
As the weather cools, we're approaching a problem--I am unable to find pants that fit my daughter. She's 22 months old, weighs 21 pounds, and is 33 inches tall. Her waist is 15 inches around, 13 inch inseam, and 16 inches from waist to feet (the kid is mostly legs!) This was great in the summer, as we just used her infant pants as capris, but with cool weather coming, we've been unable to find pants that fit her. She currently wears 0-3 or 3-6 month pants, and has one pair of 9 months that we were able to find without elastic.
We ran into this problem last year to some extent, but it wasn't as bad as her legs were shorter. We also used cute dog collars as belts, however, this year when we tried that there was too much material, even with the belt. Also, she's wearing underwear now, so we've lost the extra bulk a diaper provided.
We have some options--we buy brightly colored leggings and pair them with cute infant dresses as baby doll shirts, however the stretch pants don't hold up well for some of her rougher play--she needs a good pair of jeans for that. I've also bought some fun quilting patterns and stitched them into the hems of her jeans to extend the length a bit, and they turned out really cute, but I'd still like to find somewhere that sells slim toddler clothing.
If I can find one or two nice pairs of plain jeans and maybe a nice pair of khakis I'll be thrilled. Anyone have any suggestions? Ooh, also, if anyone has any suggestions on extra small underwear, we're currently using the little cotton diaper covers that come with the dresses we use as shirts.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks to all for the great suggestions! I've never seen the pants with adjustable waists. We do most of our clothes shopping at Target, and apparently ours doesn't carry those, so I'll check some of the other stores of on line.
I've also considered trying to make some of my own. I've done some basic sewing before, but never actually a whole article of clothing--may be fun to try. :)
The 0-3, 3-6, and 9 month pants are the ones she's worn as capris over the summer. They fall anywhere from right above her knee to mid calf. Last winter, we were able to make 9 and 12 month pants work, with a diaper underneath, and a "belt" to pull them in a bit. Since then, she's lost what little baby chub she had, and has grown quite a bit in height, plus is no longer wearing diapers. The pants she wore last winter are now 2-4 inches too short, and fall right off. The baby pants fit great, but obviously can't be worn in cool weather when her whole leg needs coverage.
Also, I know it hasn't been asked, but since she's SO small, I should add that we have ruled out any medical condition. She's hitting her milestones at or ahead of time, and is happy and healthy, just very slender. Her pediatrician, my lactation consultant, and all of the specialists we've seen pretty much agree it's a combination of heredity (I am 5'7" 125ish, with long limbs, and my husband is 6'2" and well, not sure how to describe him. Big, but not fat, but not particularly muscular wither--just very broad. He was a very lanky little boy though.) and diet. (Copy/pasted from another of my answers: ...she's picky, but in a rather unusual way. Eats plates full of every veggie under the sun--Brussels sprouts, spinach, broccoli, you name it, she'll eat it. Same with fruits. Loves eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, olives, and any kind of bean. Doesn't like meat, but will occasionally eat plain grilled chicken breast, and seafood such as shrimp, tuna, or salmon.

Won't eat most fast food like burgers or fries, and actually gets angry if you try to give her a chicken nugget. Does like pizza, but really only eats the cheese and sauce. Overall, I love her eating habits, and am glad she prefers healthy foods, however it's tough to keep weight on her when she'd rather eat a plate of nothing but veggies than anything else.
Sorry, it's sort of become second nature to me to explain why she's so tiny, since I get a lot of real life questions (many not so nice) about it.
Anyway, thanks again for the helpful suggestions! I'll check into them.
There are a lot of stores that now sell adjustable waist jeans, pants and shorts. Try Burlington, Kohls, Target and Macys!
