Carters Newborn Clothing

My neice is a few days short of 4 months, and she is only 10 pounds. Do I buy newborn clothes? Or do I buy the 0-6 month size? What diaper? I see the newborn sizes go up to 10 lbs. usually, or should I get size one to be safe? My employer has given me paid leave for one month due to thie extenuating circumstance to "figure this all out". And I'm still lost. How much clothing does a baby need in their wardrobe? I've been to the Carters outlet and spent close to $300 on receiving blankets, burp cloths, towels, booties, 0-3 month clothes (figured I couldn't go wrong there) and baby items like wipes, diapers and lotions, wash, etc etc. What else do I need?

Hello!! People the time off work is due to the legal issues surrounding the adoption of my niece and finding childcare so I can return to work. Not just to find baby accoutrements. That's silly.

The clothes you already bought should be wearable for a little while, but you should probably buy 3-6M size. As far as how many, it depends on how often you want to do wash. I'm a baby clothes addict so my kids had nearly enough to wear a different outfit for the first 3 months of their life!! Onesies are important but I can't say I ever used receiving blankets for anything more than something to change the baby on.

Diapers I'd say a size 1, although most brands are NOT the same size so you need to experiment.

As far as other things you need, I'd invest in a bouncy seat which will be invaluable to you for the next 6 months or so, but as far as the basics go you seem like you pretty much have everything covered.

You might want to buy some baby Tylenol and gas medicine to keep on hand as well, and a baby bathtub or sling to put in the big tub. You might choose to get the book "What to expect the first year" too - very informative.

I feel like every time I go shopping, I pick up a few newborn, and a few 0-3 month.

The newborn onesies by carters have a tag that say "Newborn, 5lbs-8lbs"

Does that mean after 2 weeks they won't fit anymore? Newborns usually gain weight fast.

Also, how much should I buy for each category

Newborn
0-3 months
3-6 months
6-9 months

Also, on items that just say "6 months", do those fit 3-6? or 6-9? or just for that one month?

Get more 0-3m stuff than newborn, but the 0-3m stuff may not fit at birth. My son was 8lbs8oz when he was born and needed newborn stuff till he was 4 weeks. He has a very large head so the hats were uncomfortable for him then but now nearly a year later he is happily wearing 2 of them.
I have found that sizes are not at all consistent. I boxed up all the clothes I was given in sizes (I haven't had o buy clothes yet for him, lucky me) and kept the next size up in a shopping bag in the closet. For the first 6 months I had to to a try on session with him about every 4 weeks. We made a game out of it and he still enjoys it even though it happens about every 2m now.

As for how much- they say you should have 3 of everything: One to wear, on in the wash and one that is clean. That of course assumes that you will be doing laundry every single day. Now, if you think about how much time it takes you to do laundry and the fact that you will need to go through a sleep, feed change cycle with your newborn every 2-3 hours, I would suggest 6 of everything for a newborn. It is just ridiculous to do laundry every single day. By everything I mean onesies, sleepers, face cloths, burp cloths, hats and socks. Then you need at least one towel a day and the occasional going out outfit.

6m means the range is about 6m- you will find that some of those will last from 4-6m or even up to 9m. My average sized son fit 6m clothes up to 10m while he was already wearing 12m clothes too.

Have fun shopping and get someone to throw you a baby shower- I found some of my favorites that way.

Me and my mom went out to get few things for the soon to be born my baby girl.. she said asian newborns are bigger and that the sizes for baby clothes such as carter's are based on majority race in the state.. which are... Caucasians.. she suggested for me to get size 3 months and just skip the newborn size.. ( carter's clothes run newborn-3 months-6months and beyond) hmmm and of course i already went crazy with newborn sizes... should i return all of the newborn sizes?? are asian babies bigger when born?? my mom said its OKAY for the baby to wear clothes slightly bigger that way they eventually grow into it.. save more money and more comfpy for the baby??? what should i do? exchange my newborn size to bigger sizes??
btw newborn size and 3 months clothes at carters have huge difference...

Well, I can't say for certain is asian babies are bigger. My baby are huge when their born so we don't even bother with newborn clothing. I am caucasian. Just to play it safe I always buy clothing that is 3 months and skip newborn. You never know what kind of baby will come out and how big. My last baby was 10.3lb so he never wore newborn clothes. I wouldn't exchange all of the newborn sizes. I would give both if you're giving lots of clothes. If this is a first baby, it's possible that the baby will fit in the newborn sizes. I also wouldn't hesitate to give the mom the gift receipt and leave the option open to exchange them if they like. I do that as well when I give clothing to babies. I am very picky about baby clothes so it's nice to have that options when people give me clothes for my babies.

Ok, so I get it. There is:

Newborn
3 (0-3mos)
6 (3-6mos)
9 (6-9 mos)
etc

...and this contradicts all the other brands that just put the actual months on there becuase you have to remember that 3 means 0-3 not 3-6... but that's not the real dilemma here. Some pieces of Carter's clothing don't even look the right size. I have a size 6 that looks like a 6-9mos instead of a 3-6mos but the other size 6's look like 3-6mos... Different brands have variances in actual sizes compared to others, but carters varies in ITSELF! I love carters clothing though.
My girl wore a Newborn size until she was 3 mos. I love that I can get more wear out of carters too...

I know! This drives me crazy too, but like you, I love the clothes, so I continue to buy them. I just have to remember that the Carter's run BIG on my son, it always seems like his Carter's things are a size behind the rest of his clothes, and I don't care about the weight, they still seem sooo big! For example he is 14 pounds, and the clothes that are 12 to 16 pounds are sooooo big! But only in that brand. Hmmmm....well like them anyway, so will continue to purchase them, lol.

I want to buy my babies some clothes from BabiesRUs, are Miniwear, Carter's, Gerber & Koala Baby good brands? My twins are small in weight, but long babies. I heard that Gerber tends to run abit short, & that Carter's has good length. What about Miniwear & Koala Baby clothes that are the BabiesRUs Brand? I have newborn clothes from Carter's that I bought at the NEX, but not much more than that. I wanted to get some things for the girls to wear when thier daddy gets back from Iraq in June.They will both be 3 months at that time, & I was going to get a few cute summer outfits to choose from in order to greet thier daddy at the pier. I want things that hold up well though, not too much shrinking, are long enough & true to size.All the Carter's newborn stuff has been great, but I saw that BabiesRUs Miniwear is cute too, they have little sundress outfits that run about $15 each set. Has shoes, little pants, ect.Really cute.Anybody's opinions & expierance on this brands is appreciated

i shop at babiesrus (not exclusively). we liked carters a lot at first, and still do, but found other brands we like more like Zutano and Gymboree. We aren't stuck on namebrand but when it comes to baby clothes, you can tell the difference between cute and good quality and cheap and ugly. I personally like Koala, they have some really cute stuff. We've bought a few of their outfits and we have this white knit sweater we bought for 0-3 and thank goodness at still fits at nearly 6mos because we love it so much! As for miniwear... we don't like it very much. their cute items are few and far between and they have a lot of ugly items. We don't like gerber because they do run small. Shopping at the NEX/BX is fine and all but we've stopped shopping their because there is better selection elsewhere and better prices a lot of the time. Seriously, try EBAY! I LOVE IT! A lot... we've found tons of awesome stuff on there. We got a Zutano outfit for $8 a Harajuku outfit for $30 and a Gymboree outfit for $17 and Carters PJ's for $3. Lots of it is new with tags, gently used or new with out tags or washed and worn hardly at all or not at all.

BTW babies r us is having a sale- buy one carter's get one half off.
