Cloth Diapers For Newborn

We have several assorted diapers for bigger babies, mostly mediums, but I want to start the cloth diapering at the beginning of my baby's life. So, I am guessing I will need some xs and small diapers. What do you suggest brand wise and diaper wise? Also how many of these should I plan on getting? Thanks!
I really don't want to do prefolds. I would like to do the ones that you only insert a liner-- but I didn't want to get all one size diapers because I heard they do not hit newborns.

Are you sure you want the kind with inserts... I have friends with them and they seem like a lot of work... both because of the time it takes to stuff them and a long washing system...you still have to wash the outside and inside in different ways (3 times!). My son does use an all-in-one, natural diaper, envibum diapers, I love, love them. He is 1 1/2 months and its great...and really easy, easy to wash! I do use doublers...he pees, then I take it out and use the diaper longer becaues its dry. If you are interested in the envibums...just out their website...envibum.com...seriously I love them.

Have a hard time putting a front snapping Cloth Diaper on a newborn? I put together a video tutorial for how to fold a Nifty Nappy and a Peachy ...

Just curious what other opinions are. I want to start using at the very beginning.

I used prefolds and wraps for my son and found that they leaked less than the 5 brands of disposables we tried! Get the newborn (I think orange) color from Green Mountain Diapers, that way you won't have to fold them down. I didn't know that and did fold taller ones down, it worked but was way bulkier under his clothes.

As for wraps, I tried Proraps and Thirsties X-small. Both worked well, the Proraps were cut a little smaller and would work better in the initial couple of weeks unless your kid is larger, like 8.5 pounds to start. But it seems like what brands work would depend on how they're cut and how your baby is proportioned. My son is long and lean, and was born at 20 inches, 6 pounds 11 ounces. We used cloth starting the 2nd week.

As for how many, as a bare minimum if you want to do laundry every day, 3 wraps and 15 diapers. But you would have more leeway by adding another wrap and having 2 dozen diapers, that way you could go every other day without washing.

BTW I used the X-small sizes until he was 5 weeks and almost 10 pounds. These brands are supposed to fit a bit longer than that, but I think his rise was too long and his butt crack was nearly showing, letting stuff leak out.

As for when to start, I'd highly recommend waiting until day 3 or 4. That way the sticky tarry black meconium will be out of their system and won't mess up your nice cloth.

I am not going to use prefolds and prefer something with velcro or snaps already attached. I heard fitteds are better for newborns, but honestly have no clue since I've only experimented with AIOs with my son when he was around 1 yr old. What fitteds do you suggest for a smaller baby?

We are cloth diapering our newborn and I want to be able to sun-dry the diapers, to save on electricity and for the sun's antibacterial and antistaining properties. However, in our apartment's lease is actually a clause stating you cannot line dry clothes (diapers are mentioned) on our porch.

Would it be as effective to air dry diapers by an open window? If I put the diapers by a west facing window in the late afternoon, would that be as effective as placing them outside, or do I need to resign myself to electric drying methods?

Drying by the light of a window indoors is not that effective. Outdoor drying is effective because of a combination of the direct sunlight and air circulation. Cloth diapers hold a lot of moisture even after running thru the spin cycle, so if you were drying indoors, you'd probably want to run a fan too which will drive up you electric bill too.

But if the window is visible to the outdoors, your apartment management may say diapers in the windows are unsightly too.

I'd just go with the electric dryer because you're gonna have your hands full with so much more because of your precious newborn

After researching about which cloth diapers seem to be the best, we decided to get the: Bum Genius 3.0 One Size pocket diaper, Fuzzibuns new small pocket diaper, and hemp/fleece infant prefolds with Bumpkin covers. Thinking about getting the 12 pack in the Bum Genius, 12 pack in the fuzzibuns, 5 covers (only the prefolds I'm getting need covers), and 24 prefolds. 1st, is this a good number to start with for a newborn? I would want to launder every 2 1/2, 3 days. 2nd, does anyone know if the Bum Genius 3.0 one size is too big for a newborn, or if the fuzzibuns are? 3rd, does anyone know if the Bum Genius 3.0 or the fuzzibuns are okay to use for a baby with an umbilical chord, can they be folded down? If anyone has any answers to even one of these questions it would help alot, Thanks!

Bum Genius all in ones are great, but they aren't so good for newborns as they are a bit large (our daughter was just about 8lbs when she was born, of course, babies lose a bit of that weight afterwards) and whenever she laid sideways, it leaked through the side. They did cover her umbilical cord and it was awkward, if not hard impossible, to fold it and still close it with the velcro tabs. We used Pampers Swaddlers until it healed. Maybe the prefolds will be your best bet if you want to avoid disposable diapers. When our daughter turned 4 months, we decided to get Happy Heiny's...avoid it because the snaps pinches her, even though there is an insert & somewhat loose. Although it could be that since she is pretty active and not fully unbuttoned, she is being pinched -- regardless, stick to the Bum Genius. They may be a bit bulky, but they're totally worth the purchase.

Depending on how much your baby pees, which is usually at every feeding, you may or may not need more in addition to what you have listed. Be sure to wash before you are down to the last one -- the inserts take some time to dry, even in a dryer on high.
